Be vulnerable… Exist in photos!

While on our final stretch of vacation, we had family portraits taken by Nikita, one of my son’s friends from the Vancouver Film School who generously agreed to take time away from his family, to photograph us. Wow, was it difficult to be in front of the camera for a change, for so many reasons! One of them being my weight gain this past year! Last year my doctor put me on anti-depressants because I was having some difficulty navigating through some pretty tough family stuff over the past couple of years. I won’t go into those details but needless to say, anti-depressants aren’t known to make you lose weight, but to gain it, rapidly. Though I am no longer taking them, I have yet to shed the weight which makes me that much more uncomfortable in front of a camera. Oh, Ashley Graham, how I wish to be like you! (If you don’t know who that is, Google her 🙂 )
However, not knowing when the 4 of us would be together again, I had to just suck it up and go for it. I had to put my money where my mouth is and do what I tell clients to do. EXIST IN PHOTOS! It doesn’t matter what I look like at the moment, whether overweight or looking tired, or getting older…, these photos will be cherished by those who love me. I will never be perfect, it’s just not possible. So what if I’m a little chunkier than I’d like to be right now; this is my family and we love each other unconditionally. They won’t care in 10 years that their mom carried extra pounds, they will just remember being together on that beach in Kitsilano, British Columbia during sunset.  And they certainly won’t care what I looked like in a photo once I’ve gone to Heaven.  They will just be grateful that they have a photo of their mom to show their families.  And that is priceless.
So to my potential clients: I know how awkward you feel! It’s not easy being vulnerable and looking natural in front of a camera when everything about it screams unnatural. I get it, trust me! But because I know EXACTLY how you feel , it is my mission to make you relax. I promise you will have fun and possibly even forget that the camera is there.
P.S. Although this is not Nik’s usual style of photography, he indulged me in my vision for my family shoot. I love what he captured for us! Check him out on Instagram, he’s quite talented!

Look who turns ONE

Wasn’t it just yesterday that Chloe was born? Time goes by so quickly so embrace every moment while you can!  What better way to celebrate a milestone first birthday than with a cake smash session followed by a bath time session as well!

Chloe was just waking up from a nap in the car when she was brought into my studio by her mom and her aunt Lea and she wasn’t all that happy…yet.  She wasn’t too sure of the lady with the camera so mom and auntie had their work cut out for them.  I think I may just have to hire them for future cake smash sessions 🙂

Although she wasn’t too sure of me, she sure looked pretty in pink!

Time for some cake-smashing!  Or not.

Her cute little cake was made by her auntie Naomi, owner of A CHERRY ON TOP Montreal’s go-to place for beautiful cakes and cupcakes.  But for some reason, little Chloe did not want to get dirty or eat cake (she was still a little bit cranky from being woken up). All she wanted was her mommy!  Any damage done to that cute cake was not done by Chloe  🙂

We needed mom to come to the rescue and that meant getting up and close to Chloe and in front of my camera!  Luckily aunt Lea was there to help make mommy picture ready.  Lea just happens to be her own girl-boss with her business, LEA STEADMAN MAKE UP ARTIST  so all she needed was my arsenal of handy MAC make up and a few brushes and she was ready to make magic happen…but Chloe had other plans.  She was more interested in my make up brushes than she was in the cake!  (All good though because daddy was hoping there’d be some leftovers).

Who knows, maybe Chloe will take after her aunt Lea one day because the brushes put a smile on her face and we managed to get a few happy pictures!  Yippeeee!  But only a few…

…and then she was done…

As they say, all good things must come to an end…but not when you’re ready with a cute little tub for one with some warm water and suds in it!  Nothing like a little bath to put a smile back on Chloe’s face.  And this time, the smile stayed!  Bubbles, a rubber ducky and a little dancing in the tub made for a great ending to her session.  And mom got to take her home clean!

Sometimes things don’t always go the way we plan but we just have to go with the flow and make the most of it.  Babies are unpredictable so rather than fight it, you just have to join in and capture whatever their mood is at that very moment.  At the very least, the cranky cries will give parents something to tease them about during their wedding speeches  🙂

Happy 1st birthday Chloe!

If you have a little one about to celebrate their first birthday, give me a shout, I’d love to shoot your cake smash too!  Better yet, we can do a cake smash and a bath time package so you don’t have to bring home a sticky baby  🙂

…be your own kind of beautiful (even when you’re cranky)

Patrick & Melissa = 4

Meet Patrick and Melissa, a young couple who wanted to have children but probably never expected to get the news they’d be having twins! Instant family!  But here they are expecting their first babieS! And twin girls! They will have dad wrapped around their little fingers in no time and will have mom pulling out her hair by the time they are teens. But through it all, there will be unconditional love because these little blessings were sent from Heaven just for them. Congratulation Patrick and Melissa!
Now I know that these 2 will figure things out as they go, but I’m sure they would appreciate some encouragement nonetheless. Becoming new parents is not only exciting but terrifying as well. At least it was for me. Feel free to post some wise words for this couple or share a story of your own to encourage them as they prepare to enter parenthood. And don’t forget to congratulate them!  🙂

  • Mark and Bertie

Woohoo for two little girls coming your way and our way! Such an exciting time! Mark and I know you will make amazing parents to these little angels. All we can say is that you can prepare as best you can by reading and talking to people who have experienced parenthood, but much of the learning happens on-the-go. You will be so surprised at how far instinct can take you. Your hearts and bodies will guide you. The important thing is to support each other and ask for help, to be kind to yourselves, and to let time do its thing. Your girls will be learning about you and the world at the same time as you will be learning about them. You will get tired, you will feel confused and overwhelmed, but you will be rewarded with connections to last a lifetime and memories forever etched in your spirits. We will be there for you for everything you need, and more. Congratulations to all four of you: to Mel and Pat for being blessed with two precious little ladies and to your girls being blessed with two loving people as parents. Love, Mark and Bertie and Penelope
P.S. Penelope is so excited to be big cousin to two other Miss Sunshines.ReplyCancel

  • J Mayhew Melissa Grandmother (G)

My special dear ones.  If you could only know the depth of my joy when I heard the news that I would be a great Grandmother.   I never thought I would be here but the LORD knew and HE has given me this deep joy.  As I have prayed daily for you  it will be a joy to pray now for the 4 of you.  There are going to be days when you are wondering what next but also the days of such joy.  And in each case know for assurance that you can look up.  As Grandpa would say to you keep looking up.  So Patrick and Mel. This joy is so very precious to me. And I just give all thanks to the LORD .  My Love and Prayers for you   G  xoxoReplyCancel

Japanese meaning “snow” or “happiness”, depending on which site you choose from Google search. I say that this dog in particular could be both because to look at her I feel happy, and I think of snow (or fur ball but fur ball  wasn’t part of Google’s answer to my search). And come to think of it, after a long winter, it’s the only kind of snow that makes me happy.  🙂

This cute little white ball of fur is a Japanese Spitz who came all the way from Texas to become part of the Lancing family. She is sweet natured and quiet and gentle and I wanted to scoop her up and take her home. But alas, I’m not ready for a divorce from my “could-live-without-animals” hubby who is already indulging my love of dogs with 2 of my own at home. Plus, this family would surely have something to say about me sneaking out with their new addition!

I had the best time capturing Yuki in all her cuteness.  Boy do I love my job!  Hope you enjoy the pics as much as I did taking them.

It’s hard work being this cute!  Yuki needed a nap after being such a sweet “model”.

Feel free to post pics of your own pets in the comments, I’d love to see them!

…be your own kind of beautiful…

xoxo Wendy

This is what a super mom looks like

I am obviously behind in my blogging since this shoot was done late last fall before the snow fell and my season was done.  I got a little lazy over the winter while I indulged in some me time.  Sorry about that!

Meet Christine. Single mother to 3 boys, hockey mom, follower of Jesus, business owner and non-stop woman-extrodinaire. Not sure how she did it, but even during the craziness that fills her days she still found time to record this moment in her life with a portrait session.  She wanted to decorate her wall with images of the 3 most important people in her life. This woman amazes me.  I don’t know how she manages it all, but she does. She is beautiful.  And her boys are pretty handsome too!

Christine wanted a location that would reflect her boys so we chose something that was kind of cool for these three.  An abandoned old farm tucked away in an overgrown field away from the road.  It provided the perfect backdrop for this shoot.

I just love how our kids personalities shine in front of the camera. Throughout the shoot, I could tell who was the goof, who was the smart/serious one and who was the reserved teenager. Although in the pic below the reserved teenager let go a little and joined in the goofiness.

Is it time for you to exchange the toddler pictures from 10 years ago with some updated portraits of your precious loved ones?  Don’t wait, you’ll never get this moment in time back.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.  Choose to exist in photos!

…be your own kind of beautiful…

xoxo Wendy
