Be vulnerable… Exist in photos!

While on our final stretch of vacation, we had family portraits taken by Nikita, one of my son’s friends from the Vancouver Film School who generously agreed to take time away from his family, to photograph us. Wow, was it difficult to be in front of the camera for a change, for so many reasons! One of them being my weight gain this past year! Last year my doctor put me on anti-depressants because I was having some difficulty navigating through some pretty tough family stuff over the past couple of years. I won’t go into those details but needless to say, anti-depressants aren’t known to make you lose weight, but to gain it, rapidly. Though I am no longer taking them, I have yet to shed the weight which makes me that much more uncomfortable in front of a camera. Oh, Ashley Graham, how I wish to be like you! (If you don’t know who that is, Google her 🙂 )

However, not knowing when the 4 of us would be together again, I had to just suck it up and go for it. I had to put my money where my mouth is and do what I tell clients to do. EXIST IN PHOTOS! It doesn’t matter what I look like at the moment, whether overweight or looking tired, or getting older…, these photos will be cherished by those who love me. I will never be perfect, it’s just not possible. So what if I’m a little chunkier than I’d like to be right now; this is my family and we love each other unconditionally. They won’t care in 10 years that their mom carried extra pounds, they will just remember being together on that beach in Kitsilano, British Columbia during sunset.  And they certainly won’t care what I looked like in a photo once I’ve gone to Heaven.  They will just be grateful that they have a photo of their mom to show their families.  And that is priceless.

So to my potential clients: I know how awkward you feel! It’s not easy being vulnerable and looking natural in front of a camera when everything about it screams unnatural. I get it, trust me! But because I know EXACTLY how you feel , it is my mission to make you relax. I promise you will have fun and possibly even forget that the camera is there.

P.S. Although this is not Nik’s usual style of photography, he indulged me in my vision for my family shoot. I love what he captured for us! Check him out on Instagram, he’s quite talented! https://www.instagram.com/nikita.sheffield/

Beautiful pic of a beautiful family. Wendy you look fabulous !ReplyCancel

This is what a super mom looks like

I am obviously behind in my blogging since this shoot was done late last fall before the snow fell and my season was done.  I got a little lazy over the winter while I indulged in some me time.  Sorry about that!

Meet Christine. Single mother to 3 boys, hockey mom, follower of Jesus, business owner and non-stop woman-extrodinaire. Not sure how she did it, but even during the craziness that fills her days she still found time to record this moment in her life with a portrait session.  She wanted to decorate her wall with images of the 3 most important people in her life. This woman amazes me.  I don’t know how she manages it all, but she does. She is beautiful.  And her boys are pretty handsome too!

Christine wanted a location that would reflect her boys so we chose something that was kind of cool for these three.  An abandoned old farm tucked away in an overgrown field away from the road.  It provided the perfect backdrop for this shoot.

I just love how our kids personalities shine in front of the camera. Throughout the shoot, I could tell who was the goof, who was the smart/serious one and who was the reserved teenager. Although in the pic below the reserved teenager let go a little and joined in the goofiness.

Is it time for you to exchange the toddler pictures from 10 years ago with some updated portraits of your precious loved ones?  Don’t wait, you’ll never get this moment in time back.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.  Choose to exist in photos!

…be your own kind of beautiful…

xoxo Wendy

Miss “K” and Miss “O”

It’s not every day you get to photograph twins and was I ever excited to photograph them again.  I had the honour of photographing these beautiful girls for the first time a few years ago where we did an outdoor tea party session.  This time I had them in my studio for a more classic, “vintagy”, “princessy” photoshoot.  They were just as sweet this time around.  They love the camera and the camera loves them!  How cute are they?!?   P.S. The only way I could tell who was who is by the color of their crown 🙂

I’d love to hear from you, let me know what you think.

Be your own kind of beautiful…

xoxo Wendy

Fredericka & Her Girls

I decided to run a Mother / Daughter promotion for Mother’s Day and Fredericka jumped at the chance to be photographed with her girls.  Well, maybe not jumped but thought it’s now or never.  So into my studio they came.  “S” was a model in the making!  She was easy going, posed herself quite confidently and I got some great shots.  “D” made me work.  She is a fun, goofy natured little girl who likes to laugh and be free.  Capturing her was a bit more of a challenge but we did it!  I got some great shots of her in her quieter moments and she is just beautiful.  All in all the girls and I had a great time and mom (and dad) loved the final images.

And just for fun, this is what “D” is all about.  FUN!  Priceless, goofy, FUN (photobombing her sister who was in the background posing)  🙂

What is the best gift you got from your kids on Mother’s Day?  Breakfast in bed?  Flowers?  When my daughter was younger (she’s now a 17 year old teenager-moms of teens, you’ll know the relevance to mentioning her age now) she used to clean the main level of the house.  Dishes done, vacuuming done, counters cleared, stuff put away, the works.  To me that was THE best gift!  It meant I could just relax and enjoy the day being mom.

As always…be your own kind of beautiful,

Wendy
